Here is the question:


To get this answer, you need to use "Emf =  - dΦB/dt = - d/dt (B*A*N)*sin(theta)"

 

My question is, why don't you use cos(theta) since you are using the formula for magnetic flux...looking at your slides, you say:

 

How do I know when you use sin/cos in a problem like this?

In your original question, the angle theta is between the B and the plane of the loop. In this example shown above, the angle is between B and the normal of the plane of the loop. The formal ways of doing it is to use the angle between B and the normal of the loop.

So then if the formal way of doing it is using the normal of the loop, why don't you do cos(theta) in this problem, and use the normal of the loop?
