Electron Wave/Particle

How is an electron both a wave and a particle?  I understand the particle properties of the electron, but how do we know that it is also a wave?  I understand that this is sort of the basis of quantum mechanics, but what wave properties does an electron exhibit?

In class, we showed the electron diffraction demo. The diffraction type of phenomenon is a wave property -- so you would need to find phase differences and figure out constructive or destructive interference. To this end, electrons must have wave property.
